 From the President

On Tuesday Canberra Bridge Club hosted our first social event for over two and a half years! It is hard to imagine back in March of 2020 that we would be still living with the consequences of this terrible virus moving into 2023. I just hope that those who attended Tuesday’s function enjoyed yourselves and will be back again as we have more functions in the Bridge Club.

More importantly is the educational opportunity being offered on 26th November by William Jenner-O’Shea. This guy is a leading bridge coach, and we are privileged to have him come to our club to offer a series of workshops. Details of how you can book a place is further down this newsletter so please consult your partners and come along. We need to know numbers very soon.

We are also hosting a Directors course on the weekend of 19-20th November in the Olive Lott room hosted by BFACT so anyone who is wishing to learn more about the rules of Bridge or wishes to become more involved in Directing should take this very convenient option.

It's been a long time since we've had a comprehensive working bee at the clubhouse. From 9.30am on Saturday 19 November we will be putting up Christmas decorations, tidying up inside and lots of gardening. We would appreciate as many of you who are available to come and assist.

Don’t rescue your partner!

 A Word on our Sponsors

Many members are aware of our Club Sponsors, listed on our website and appearing via PowerPoint on the TV. However, it is timely to follow up our President's comments a fortnight ago and remind members of the very positive role that sponsorship plays in the club. We currently have eight sponsors who pay a nice fee to advertise their business. It is essential that we support our sponsors and let them know we are from the bridge club. They need to know that their support is an investment, not just a cost to them. Consequently, please tell them you are a CBC member. The list of sponsors is:

In regards to Travel Associates, their sponsorship includes the standard fee, plus they pay a trailing commission on bookings made. You are highly encouraged to make any travel arrangements via Travel Associates. They have shop fronts at Belconnen Mall (Rachel our account manager), Reis and James Travel Associates at Manuka (Alan), Jamison Plaza Travel Associates (Thea) and Gungahlin Travel Associates (Keiran). Please let the staff know you are a CBC member and family and friends can be included in arrangement.

  • A proforma is available from our office to be used to detail your booking and handed back to our office staff to enable reconciliation of the commission payable.

Additionally, Travel Associates offer a Protected Luggage arrangement when flights have been booked via their network.

  • Your luggage will not only be tracked, but its return to you will be expedited
  • You will receive a notification when your luggage has been located, what forwarding flight it is on, when it will land and confirmation that it is on track.
  • If your luggage is not recovered within 96 hours, you will be compensated with AU$1000 per bag* to your nominated bank account with 2-3 business days
  • Travel Associates will continue to look for your luggage for another 21 days if it cannot be quickly located.

Lighter Moments

The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.”

My tolerance for idiots is extremely low these days. I used to have some immunity built up, but obviously there's a new strain out there.

It’s not my age that bothers me, it’s the side effects.

I’m not saying I’m old and worn out, but I make sure I’m nowhere near the kerb on garbage day.

Me, sobbing: “I’m not coming back here anymore ... I'm not going to let you hurt me again."   My Trainer: "It was one sit-up.”

As I’ve gotten older, people think I’ve become lazy. The truth is I’m climate change proactive and am just being more energy efficient.

Ay Caramba!

And finally, congratulations to our own Professor Bruce Chapman who with a colleague has just been given a prestigious academic prize (the Public Policy Impact Award) by the UK Economic and Social Research Council for work on introducing Higher Edcuation Contribution Scheme into Colombia.  Congratulations Bruce!

If you know any recent accomplishments amongst our members please let us know.

Be kind to each other
