From the President
As I am sure that you are all aware, the Club is offering many sessions of bridge on the RealBridge platform. You can choose whether to play in the morning, in the afternoon or at night, or you can choose to play multiple times! On RB you can talk to your partner and to the opposition, can play in your ugg boots and trackpants ( and no one knows), and save of fuel and time by not driving to the Club. RB is so convenient!
As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the Club’s AGM is to be held on Monday 11 October at 5.30 pm. As the ACT is in lockdown and will be at the time of the AGM, the meeting will be held on Zoom. So please enter the time and date in your diaries!
If you are considering nominating for the Committee, please ring me if you would like to chat about it.
Please stay safe and enjoy your bridge.
CBC Annual General Meeting
Canberra Bridge Club's Annual General Meeting will held via Zoom on Monday 11 October 2021 at 5.30pm.
Five AGM documents are available on the website - Notice, agenda, draft minutes of the 2020 AGM, nomination process and proxy appointments.
Given the need for the AGM to be held via Zoom and the current closure of the club, special arrangements are in place for nominations and proxy appointments, as outlined in the documents. These arrangements reflect the usual requirements for nominations and proxy appointments adapted to the constraints of a lockdown.
We ask that Zoom registrations, nominations and proxy appointments are provided well before the due dates indicated as much as possible so that Michele and the managers have sufficient time to do the follow-up work required. Thank you for your co-operation with this.
We are preparing a Zoom Guide with tips for participating in a Zoom AGM. Look out for this in a future newsletter.
The Statement of Accounts for 2020-21 will also be provided as soon as possible.

MTB caters for a range of abilities and each week covers a fundamental concept to an increased level of mastery. Students who have done a Beginners Course and/or some Supervised play and have limited experience are welcome to attend. With more experience you will still benefit from a deeper understanding of the concept being discussed.
No registration is needed.

Opening Leads Against Suits by Joan Butts
- Try to imagine what dummy will look like before you make the opening lead
- Is there going to be a long strong side suit in dummy?
- Have the opponents avoided no trumps yet have bid three suits?
- Did your partner have a chance to overcall and didn’t?
- Does dummy figure to have trump support and a short suit (for trumping)?
- Did your partner bid anything?
- It can be dangerous to lead a short suit, especially if it has been bid by the opponents
- Often you help declarer by leading your short suit because they will know where any honour cards in the suit are
