From the President:

Following the successful return of the Monday morning cohort, we will restart face-to-face sessions on Thursdays at 10am from next week, Thursday 8 October. Numbers permitting, Jodi will run a matchpoints session AND an imps session. For the moment the BBO matchpoints session will also continue, but at the later time of 10.15am.

We are planning to reopen the kitchen from Monday 12 October under strict rules. We need to get the appropriate supplies so next week please continue to bring your thermos and bottle of water

The club will need one volunteer per session to ensure that the kitchen is left tidy and clean. Please contact the managers or Tim Mather.

Best wishes,

Pam

Next week at the Clubrooms

Have you read the latest versions of the CBC COVID-19 Safety Plan and Checklist for Members?

Bidding Boxes

Most players have found the use of bidding boxes has enhanced visibility. We thank members for whom this is a new experience for their helpfulness in persevering. Each player keeps the one box for the session and then must disinfect the outside of that box at the end of the session.

Visitors

Now that we are playing more sessions in the clubrooms, and while Covid is not rampant in the ACT, we can accommodate some visitors at our sessions.

Visitors need to pay $13 as previously, either by purchasing 5 vouchers via direct deposit in our account, or by having exact change in an envelope. We will now have appropriate vouchers available.

Members must ensure that a visitor playing with them understands our Covid rules.

For the week commencing Monday 5 October we have six sessions scheduled at the clubrooms

  • Monday morning 10:00am                                                     Bruce Crossman
  • Monday evening 7:00pm (walk-in) & &:15pm (event)            Christy Geromboux
  • Tuesday afternoon 1:15pm                                                    Sally Barber
  • Wednesday morning 10:00am                                               Ian Robinson
  • Thursday morning 10:00am (MP and Imps)                          Jodi Tutty
  • Friday afternoon 1:15pm                                                       Bruce Crossman

Please remember that "mingling" - unnecessary interactions between individuals - is forbidden due to problems with the spread of Covid. It is therefore critical that players do not move between rounds until told to do so by the director

Vouchers: Must be purchased five (or multiples of 5) vouchers at a time, preferably in advance by direct deposit into CBC bank account:

  • BSB: 032 730
  • Account no: 355176

An interesting article to read on Bridge during COVID-19

An interesting read on how another Bridge Club has adapted to online Bridge during the pandemic, and the pros & cons members mention.

Article: The Conversation - New tricks? When COVID forces a bridge club online, what becomes of their community?

Why do we play?

Life, they say, can sometimes deal you a bad hand. But the latest medical research from the University of California indicates that, if life deals you a hand at all, good or bad, you are likely to live longer and look younger than those who hold no cards. Contract bridge it appears is the secret of healthy living. Even as the hand is dealt, your immune system swings into action. The very sight of cards affects the frontal lobe of the brain, the thymus gland stimulates the T lymphocytes and during several long rubbers the dorsolateral cortex is so excited that your body can fend off almost any disease.
