From the President:

A little late but I acknowledge that National Volunteers Week has just passed. Always a time to be grateful for those in the CBC community who contribute in so many ways.

The growth in our grounds is becoming too luxuriant. We can now hold an outdoor Working Bee to tame some of it – on Friday 5 June from 9.30am – if you have an hour or two to spare. Please bring any garden equipment that you have, including gloves. West Savery has already done a fine job of pruning the roses.

Best wishes,

Pam

Online Bridge with CBC

For the week commencing Monday 1 June – We have scheduled six tournaments (sessions)

  • Monday morning 10.00am - Directed by Bruce
  • Tuesday evening 7.30pm (imps) - Directed by Stephen
  • Wednesday morning 10.00am - Directed by Ian
  • Wednesday morning 10.15am a relaxed game for our newer members - Directed by Barb
  • Wednesday evening 7:30pm - Directed by Christy
  • Thursday morning 10.00am - Directed by Jodi

The 10:15 Wednesday tournament is a relaxed 20 board session for our newer members and those enjoying BBO for the first time. Please make sure you enter the correct tournament (and only one tournament) on Wednesdays.

The following week we are intending to trial a parallel tournament on Thursday Mornings with imps (Butler) scoring.

All CBC members are invited to register with the club's BBO platform.

Read our Playing in a CBC Session Online page to learn how to register and join us.

Occasional notes

  • We know that we are responsible for alerting our own bids. If we are about to open 1NT, advanced BBOers will type the range (say 15-18) in the explain section of the bidding box BEFORE clicking on 1 and then NT. That way both the bid and the explanation are seen by the opponents at the same time. This speeds up the game.

  • Claiming is an important part of the BBO culture. When claiming best practice is to add things like – drawing the 2 trumps, or 4C,2S winners.

  • If an opponent claims, it is incumbent on both members of the opposing pair to analyse the claim and either reject or accept. It is not appropriate for one opponent to wait for their partner to assess the claim – it only slows the process down.

  • The results for each tournament are now posted on the CBC website and are also available through Pianola, with a results email being sent to all registered pianola members. These results have BBO names converted to member’s names. It can take up to 12 hours for the results to be posted.

  • You can also get results from BBO by searching in your recent history. Only BBO has a record of each hand you played with a card by card replay.

More information is available on our BBO pages:

"HELP with BBO" session Monday 1 June 12 midday at Deakin

Jodi and Bill Tutty will help any interested member wishing to learn to use the Bridge Base Online platform.

They will:

  • assist members to set up BBO accounts on their own computers/laptops/tablets
  • assist members organise registration to the club’s dedicated BBO area
  • set up a practice game online, so that members can get a feel for BBO

Jodi and Bill will have some laptops available for those who use a home computer, but members attending should ideally bring their battery charged device with them. A credit card to buy BBO dollars is also a good idea.

There is no cost to the seminar and the club will strictly follow social distancing rules. At this stage we can only offer eighteen spots.

To attend the seminar, members MUST pre-book on a first in-first served basis by emailing the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Bookings close today, Friday 29 May, at 4.00pm and we will progressively acknowledge all member’s emails (note emails after 2pm may have delayed reply until Sunday).

The registrations have run hot already from those who have not yet signed up to BBO, so there are only a couple of places left. If you miss out on a place this time, we will run another session if there is demand for it.

ABF tournaments on BBO

Bridge Tips

What does a bid of your trump suit at the 5 level mean?

Where the opponnents have bid:

♠Axxx
Qxx
KQJxx
♣X

  ♠KQJxx
AKx
Ax
♣Xxx

1D (2C) 2S (pass)
3S (Pass) 5S

When the opponents have bid, the 5S bid asks partner if they can keep clubs to one loser.

Here partner can and obliges by bidding 6S.

When the opponents have remained silent:

A jump to the 5 level in the trump suit asks about the quality of partner’s trumps.

Interesting Snippets

Note this paragraph is titled Snippets (not facts!) so we won’t be held responsible for accuracy!

Many years ago in Scotland, a new game was invented.

It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only...Ladies Forbidden'… and thus, the word GOLF entered Into the English language.

Lighter Moments

  • I used to spin that toilet paper like I was on Wheel of Fortune. Now I turn it like I'm cracking a safe
  • I need to practice social-distancing from the refrigerator.
  •  Hint: every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pyjamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom.
