Newsletter - 12 October 2018
From the President:
Thank you very much to our Bridge4Kids team – Patricia McDonald, Bruce Crossman, Bev Crossman, Margaret Kyburz, Susie Ryrie, Erin Tewes and Ross Crichton. They have enabled many children to enjoy the pleasure of cards (and pizzas!) and may be sowing seeds of long years of bridge ahead.
Ann Pettigrew, who has taken on many roles in this club, will be leaving Canberra in the near future. We will hold a morning tea on THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER to say our good-byes. I would appreciate help in the form of donations of edible goodies. Please let me know if you can help so I can judge whether a fishes-and-loaves trick is needed.
Best wishes,
Pam
Flight Centre
To make the existing Trailing Commission process more sustainable for our Members, Club Managers and Flight Centre, we are making some changes effective immediately. There will be just three Flight Centre branches, Manuka, Weston Creek at Coolamon Court and Belconnen Mall from this point where members can make bookings for CBC to obtain the 1% trailing commission. Effectively, these branches are where most of members have dealt in the past. The following 3 names are the managers of their respective branches. You can off course deal with any of their staff.
- Will Mackay at Manuka 02 62396499
- Paul Nugent at Weston 02 62083588
- Melanie Harlow at Belconnen 02 62532422
Additionally, Flight Centre is making some specials available to coincide with the Gold Coast Congress. These are set out below and are subject to availability at the time of booking.
Package for Return flights with Virgin Airlines including luggage, plus 8 nights’ accommodation twin share and return airport transfers in a shuttle bus to Broadbeach.
- Santa Anne by the Sea in Broadbeach in a Junior Suite - 4 star.
Package price - twin share: $840 per person. - Bel Air on Broadbeach in 1 bedroom apartment - 4 star.
Package price - twin share: $993 per person. - Mantra Broadbeach on the Park in a 2 bedroom apartment - 4 ½ star.

Details in the CBC Booklet
Are your phone and email details up-to-date & correct in our blue book & Pianola?
If not, please let Kerry or Emily know by Wednesday 31st October so we can ensure they are correct in the 2019 book.
Perfume
Allergies seem to be an increasing problem. Perfume affects some people badly so it would be helpful if people could refrain from wearing perfume for bridge sessions. We are in close proximity for a long period.

Bidding Boxes Needing Attention
Would players please place any inadequate bidding boxes in the cardboard box at the front of the Barry Turner Room, that is boxes missing bidding cards or damaged boxes?
Perelle will fix them up and put them back into circulation.
If your bidding box has duplicate bidding cards in it, please place those cards in the box at the front also.
Results
New Zealand Congress
Congratulations to Andrew Spooner who performed very well in the New Zealand National Congress. His team (Matt Smith – Andrew Spooner, John McMahon – Nico Ranson) won their way to the Semi-Finals of the Teams, only being defeated then by the eventual winners.
The same team, as the Australian Youth team, comfortably won the Youth Test Match against New Zealand.
Albury Congress Swiss Pairs
Congratulations to Claire Hughes and Pamela McKittrick who finished 14th in the Open event, thereby coming second in the Restricted field.
